Spring, baby animals and daffodils are just a few things we associate with Easter. But, one thing that unites us all throughout this holiday is chocolate; the nation simply loves it! We all have fond memories of easter egg hunts, desperately trying to get our paws on as much chocolate as we could possibly – but, do any of us actually know why we celebrate this sugar-fuelled holiday? Or what date it falls on this year, or why chocolate is consumed in the first place?

If, like us, you’re looking forward to consuming one (or two… or three…) easter eggs, but want to know more about the holiday, read on to find out a bit more about it.

When is Easter in 2021?

Unlike a lot of religious holidays, Easter isn’t on the same day every year – so there is often confusion as to when the holiday will take place. This year, Easter is a little earlier this year, falling on the 4th April. This might seem a little odd to have a holiday without a set date, but it all makes sense; we promise!

Easter is determined by the moon. Yes, you read that right. Although Easter is a Christian holiday, the date is determined by the Jewish calendar. The Jewish calendar is based on the lunar cycle – which is why, according to our calendar, Easter appears to fall on different days.

Why do we celebrate Easter?

This question is extremely personal and everyone will have a different answer. Yes, Easter has religious roots and is meant to commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus – as we are sure you have heard. However, it has since become a popular holiday enjoyed by everyone, religion and spirituality aside. However, for a lot of people, Easter is a symbol of life, rebirth and the welcoming of spring.

Did you know: Originally, the painting of eggs was believed to represent birth, new life and fertility. Next time you paint an egg to celebrate Easter, remember the significance of this powerful tradition!

In today’s society, Easter is a colourful combination of all these things. Some of us still favour the religious meaning, others love the idea of welcoming spring.

Whatever the reason is you celebrate, it is a wonderful way for people to come together.

Why is chocolate such a big deal at Easter?

What came first; the chicken or the egg? Okay, don’t worry, we don’t actually expect you to answer that question. But, in the instance of Easter, the egg is extremely significant. Within Christian belief, eggs were used as a symbol of Jesus. Traditionally, eggs were not allowed to be eaten during the six-week period leading up to Easter (Lent), so people would collect their eggs instead, to decorate the shells ready to be eaten when Lent was over. Chocolate eggs were introduced later on, as a way for children to get involved.

Whether you love the traditions of Easter, or are just in it for the chocolate; Easter is a holiday for everyone. We cannot wait for spring to arrive and we wish you all the best for the upcoming holiday.
